Offering an early 4-digit marked KAYWOODIE Super Grain. Having a 4-digit shape number, with being a Super Grain model is somewhat rare. The Super Grain grading came into existence in 1935, based on my research, and the 4-digit shape numbers were used up to about 1937-38 timeframe. Before the grading stamps, most were just stamped DRINKLESS. The Super Grain name was part of a new grading system, and it was a High-Grade pipe in that line-up. They were noted in their literature as being made of Grecian briar, which is known to smoke quite well, and typically they look excellent also. First two digits 51 relate more to the family and finish color. The last two digits 31C are for the shape, in this case a “Medium squat 6-panel apple”. The first two digits were dropped about 1938, but the same two-digit shape numbers carried on after into the 1970’s. The pipe is a retro-classic, and about 85-90 years seasoned. The exterior shows flame and cross-grain, very light normal wear, and no issues. The bowl is very precisely cut, which I’m sure took a LOT of work. The bowl interior is nicely seasoned, with the draw hole is bottom center, and it draws very easy, slight wear to inner rim. The stem is original, and made of vulcanite, has one tiny tooth impression on the button, strong shape, lines up slightly counter-clockwise to the shank. It had the 4-hole stinger, which was cropped, so the draw-hole now faces straight to the shank, and a pipe cleaner runs from bit to bowl. Pipe weighs about 1.1 ounces, 31.1 grams. Carefully polished, and is ready to smoke!
