Why This Card Matters
Ernie Banks hit 512 home runs across nineteen seasons, every one of them with the Cubs, and won back-to-back National League MVP awards in 1958 and 1959 - the first player from a losing club to do it twice. He signed with Chicago as a free agent on September 8, 1953 out of the Kansas City Monarchs, finished with 2,583 hits and 1,636 RBI, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1977. Allen & Ginter renders him in the set's painted-portrait style on the tobacco-era design, which makes this a distinctly different-looking Banks card from the flagship Topps issues.
