Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694–1773) was an influential 18th-century British statesman, diplomat, orator, and man of letters who came to epitomise the wit and polished courtly manners of the Enlightenment era.

Published shortly after Chesterfield's death, this collection features a wide array of his previously unprinted correspondence with close friends, alongside his political essays, speeches, and miscellaneous writings that reflect the wit and social polish for which he was renowned. The work opens with an extensive biography written by Dutch physician and librarian Dr. Matthew Maty, which includes a chronicle of the wider civil, literary, and political history of Stanhope's era.

Second edition, four volumes, bound in two.
