Scarce lot of 5 early print issues of “Cypher: Comics as Eyewitness,” a documentary comics and graphic journalism series published by Front Line Defenders in 2020.

This collection includes the first five consecutive monthly issues of the series, July through November 2020, making it an especially interesting group for collectors of unusual independent publications, graphic journalism, political art, and human rights ephemera.

Cypher: Comics as Eyewitness was created as an international storytelling project documenting the experiences of real human rights defenders through comics and illustrated reportage. Artists from around the world collaborated on stories dealing with activism, freedom of expression, social justice, environmental and civil rights, and the risks faced by people defending their communities.

Physical print copies of Cypher are uncommon and appear to be difficult to find on the secondary market. The project was also distributed digitally, making surviving physical issues particularly interesting as examples of contemporary independent publishing and NGO ephemera. Finding five consecutive early issues together, beginning with the July 2020 launch issue, is especially noteworthy.
