Vintage Balinese Hand-Carved & Hand-Painted Wooden Barong Style Head – Indonesia

Beautiful vintage decorative wooden head, hand carved and hand painted in the traditional style associated with Bali, Indonesia.

The sculpture features a dramatic mythological face with a bright red complexion, prominent elongated nose, expressive blue eyes, exposed teeth and an elaborate multi-level headdress.

Rich polychrome decoration includes red, black, blue, cream and metallic gold-tone finishes, together with carved ornamental details. Small fiber/tassel decorations are attached on both sides of the face, adding additional texture and character.

The overall appearance is consistent with traditional Balinese Barong-style and mythological mask carving, a well-known form of Indonesian folk art. Similar Balinese masks and carved heads are traditionally produced in wood and finished with elaborate painted and gilded decoration.
