Antique French Napoleon III Bevelled Glass & Gilt Ormolu Jewellery Casket c1870

This item is an antique French ormolu jewellery casket, made during the Napoleon III era, c1870. These elegant glass cases were most often purchased as luxury souvenirs in Paris and are often described as Palais Royal, there had been an area close to the palaces that specialised in this style of gorgeous gifts.

This quality glass vitrine is an all-original example, it has been designed with a rectangular form. Crafted with thick, heavy bevelled glass panels framed in an ornate gilded brass or bronze ormolu metal structure, supported by four decorative flared cabriole feet. All five thick glass panels are heavily bevelled adding to the sheer opulence of this piece. Remarkably the box is almost free of the expected chips and nibbles to the bevelled corner edges of the glass. The feet are slightly out of shape, which is quite normal on these boxes. The catch and hinge are in good order.

This classic Parisian boudoir style box was designed to display fine jewellery or precious keepsakes. The beveled glass lid opens to reveal the original pink silk cushion in the base, which has naturally faded over time. The pink silk covered cushion has shredded with age on one side, but in my opinion adds to its faded grandeur charm.

The box measures approx. 8.7cm by 6.5cm by 6.5cm.
