Exceptional original 1905 Celluloid Starch box manufactured by The Celluloid Starch Company of New Haven, Connecticut.

The package features beautiful period advertising graphics in green, brown and gold, with the front prominently marked “APRIL 14TH 1905.” The front also advertises Celluloid Starch as “A Novel Invention! Requires No Cooking,” while the reverse contains the original laundry instructions and advertising for “The Only Antiseptic Starch.”

Remarkably, this approximately 120-year-old package remains FULL with its original contents and is in outstanding condition for its age. The box retains exceptionally strong color and graphics with very little of the wear normally encountered on disposable advertising packaging from this period.

This product has an important connection to American advertising history. An example of Celluloid Starch packaging is preserved in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History. The Smithsonian catalogs its example as dating to 1905 and identifies The Celluloid Starch Company of New Haven, Connecticut as the maker.

This is an outstanding piece of early 20th-century American advertising and laundry history. Original product packages of this age were typically discarded after use, making a surviving full example in this condition particularly appealing.
