Stylish Antique Moulded Crystal Double Open Salt Cellar or Saleron Double C1910

Before shaker bottles became common, these elegant open dishes were placed on dining tables to hold salt and pepper, allowing guests to pinch the spices out or use small spoons.

Double open salt cellars, also known as saleron double, were very popular from between 1907 and 1916, there are often examples shown in catalogues of the period. They were designed to sit on a dining table to hold salt on one side and pepper or another ground spice on the other. The central moulded crystal column acts as a built-in handle for easily passing it between dinner guests. Although small ones like this may have been for single person setting.

The moulded or pressed crystal forms two connected open faceted bowls with a central finial. The faceted bowls and finial catch and reflect the light beautifully. The bases have starburst faceted pattern on the underside. The base appears to have been polished flat.

There are no maker marks, but it is almost identical to those made by Baccarat.

The slat measures approx. 8.5cm by 3.7cm by 4.4cm.

There are no cracks to the salt cellar, there is a pronounced seam mark to one of the bowls.

A gorgeous and usable collectable.
