Rare Antique Crystal & Celluloid Faux Shagreen Powder Pot, c1930.

This is a very stylish powder pot made c1930. It a heavy, brilliant cut glass vanity jar or powder pot featuring deep geometric geometric starburst and pinwheel cuts, that beautifully catch and reflect the light.

The lid is an imitation shagreen (stingray skin) made from moulded celluloid. The manufacturing process beautifully captures the distinct, circular pebbled textures and dyed green coloration of real shark or ray skin. During the 1920s and 1930s, plastics like celluloid and Bakelite allowed manufacturers to mass-produce the highly sought-after ‘exotic’ styles of the day, making luxury vanity sets more accessible to the public.

The powder pot measures approx. 7.3cm by 9.5cm in diameter.

The glass is undamaged, there is only some light wear to the base as you would expect. The lid is also undamaged, there is some wear in places to the green enamelling.

A wonderfully stylish dressing table accessory.
