A Takeda doll from the Edo period, featuring hand-painted eyes.
There is an ink inscription on the bottom of the stand reading: "Shaku-ni-sun [1.2 shaku], Highest Quality Dōfū, No. 2."
The doll appears to depict Ono no Dōfū, a renowned calligrapher active during the mid-Heian period.
It appears that hair was originally attached to the sides of the head, but it is currently missing.
There are two small areas where the *gofun* (shell-powder gesso) finish has flaked off the legs.
The red fabric on the front of the stand has been repaired.
