Original 1839 Connecticut funeral sermon preached upon the death of Rev. Matthew Noyes, longtime minister of Northford, Connecticut, by Rev. Timothy Gillett of Branford.

Mr. Gillett's Sermon at the Funeral of Rev. Matthew Noyes

Matthew Noyes (1764–1839) was a prominent early Connecticut clergyman and Yale graduate. He graduated from Yale College in 1785, studied theology, and was ordained pastor of the church at Northford in 1790. He remained associated with the Northford congregation for approximately forty-five years, with his active pastoral service ending in 1835.

Noyes was also elected a Fellow of Yale College in 1823 and remained in that position until his death in Northford on September 23, 1839.

This sermon was preached at his funeral by Rev. Timothy Gillett of Branford and was separately published in 1839. An example of this same funeral sermon is preserved in the Branford Historical Society archives, where it is cataloged among the society's early published Connecticut sermons.

An interesting piece of Northford, North Branford, Branford, Yale, and early Connecticut religious history, particularly given Noyes's unusually long ministry in the community.
