The Soviet autotransport troops, known as "autobats", were an important part of the Soviet contingent's logistics support system during the Afghan War. They were responsible for transporting servicemen, fuel, food, spare parts and other property between military bases, warehouses and garrisons.
Of particular importance was the provision of motor convoys that constantly moved between the USSR and Afghanistan, as well as within the country. Due to the difficult mountainous terrain and the lack of a developed transport network, cars often remained the main means of delivering goods. Drivers transported goods over passes, desert areas and narrow mountain roads, where the convoys were constantly exposed to the danger of ambushes and shelling.
In addition to transportation, the servicemen of the autobats were engaged in the repair and maintenance of vehicles, the transportation of damaged equipment and the organization of the movement of the convoys. To protect against attacks, motor convoys were accompanied by combat units, and the drivers themselves also had to undergo military and tactical training.
Service in the autobatas was extremely difficult and dangerous. Drivers could spend many hours behind the wheel, covering long distances in heat, dust, and under the constant threat of mines and ambushes. The supply of Soviet troops with everything necessary for combat operations directly depended on their work.
