Vintage two-piece figural salt and pepper shaker set made in Japan. The set consists of a standing figure in a blue robe with red trousers, black shoes and an orange/black cap, paired with a round orange jar or lantern painted with a green Chinese good-fortune style character in a black roundel. The two pieces nest together so the figure appears to be carrying or leaning over the jar.
Both pieces are hand-painted glazed porcelain. Shaker holes are pierced in the figure's shoulder and in the shoulder of the jar. The underside of the figure is hand-lettered JAPAN in red; no other maker's mark or paper label is visible in these photos.
Both original cork stoppers are present. The cork in the figure is broken and crumbling and only partially fills the hole. There is grey scuffing and dark speckling on the black shoe bases, small paint rub on the black collar band of the jar, and a thin dark line down the back of the blue robe that could be a firing line or a hairline - the photos do not resolve it. Rims and base edges are not photographed closely enough to rule out small chips or flea bites.
Measured against the ruler shown, the set stands about 3 inches tall. Sold as pictured; the two shakers and their corks are all that is included.
