A fine, highly detailed hand-coloured caricature, showing the archetypal 'John Bull' and his family indulging themselves with ice-cream. The scene dates from the late Regency period.

The plate comes from a memoir by Captain Rees Gronow, soldier, MP and dandy, of his life during the years 1810 - 1880. The memoir recalled 'the camp, court, clubs and society of the years 1810 to 1860', so covering the Regency, late Georgian and early Victorian periods. The artist was Joseph Grego.

This scene shown life around 1825, but the memoir itself was not published until 1889.

I have been an extensive collector of old and unusual books, prints and other ephemera over many years. However, it is now time to downsize, selling items from my own, private collection. I hope to pass on my items to other collectors who appreciate their rarity and beauty. 

Condition:  very good, with just a little discolouration around the edges. Please see above and look carefully at the photos. 

Measurements: measures approx 10.25" x 6.5", with a wide border.
