Department 56 Harry Potter Village, Hogwarts' Express Lit Train, Set of 3 & Draco Waits at Platform 9¾, Value Set, Retired & Rare, Brand New

The scarlet engine that started everything, plus one smug blond boy who was absolutely certain he would be in Slytherin. He was not wrong, sadly.

Introduction

Eleven o'clock, September the first, King's Cross. The barrier between platforms nine and ten looks like ordinary brick, and it is not, and the only way to find that out is to walk at it as though you mean it. On the other side stands the Hogwarts Express, scarlet and vast and already steaming, and the noise of several hundred children and their owls fills a station that Muggles cannot see.

The train is the great constant of the series. Seven years, fourteen journeys, and every single one of them matters. Harry meets Ron on it. Hermione finds them on it. Neville loses Trevor on it. Harry is discovered under an Invisibility Cloak with a broken nose on it. The Dementors board it, and Lupin drives them off with chocolate and a Patronus. Whatever else is happening in that year's story, it begins with a whistle and a compartment door sliding shut.

And on the platform, every year without fail, is Draco Malfoy. He is the first person Harry's own age to offer him friendship and the first to have it turned down, and that refusal in the corridor of this very train sets the tone for seven books. Pale, drawling, permanently accompanied by Crabbe and Goyle, and always looking for someone to look down on. The Department 56 figure captures him exactly as you picture him: standing on the platform surveying the crowd like a boy who has already decided what everyone here is worth.

These two go together the way they do in the books. The train and the boy waiting beside it, the beginning of every year at Hogwarts. Both pieces were made for one year only, and brand new boxed examples of either are now genuinely difficult to find, which makes the pair together the sort of thing that turns a collection into a display.

About Department 56

Founded in 1976, Department 56 is the gold standard in collectible villages, celebrated for richly detailed, hand painted, illuminated buildings, animated accessories, and figure sets that blend fine artistry with storytelling. In 2018 the company launched its Harry Potter Village line, recreating the most beloved corners of the Wizarding World, from Hogwarts Castle and Diagon Alley to Hogsmeade and Privet Drive, in meticulous miniature. Every piece is lifted straight from the books and films, ready to display with the craftsmanship and authenticity that serious collectors prize.

Brought to Life by Department 56

The Hogwarts' Express is one of the largest and most impressive pieces Department 56 produced for the Harry Potter Village line, a three-piece lighted train stretching over 21 inches assembled, illuminated by batteries or by the Department 56 AC adapter. Draco Waits at Platform 9¾ is scaled to stand beside it on the platform, hand-painted in the same polyresin and stone powder blend. The pair coordinates directly with Hogsmeade Station at the far end of the line for anyone building the full journey.

A Note on Collector Value

Since 1976, one hallmark of Department 56 has defined the hobby: the annual retirement cycle. Each year a handful of buildings and figures are retired from every village line to make room for new designs, keeping the line fresh while creating the genuine scarcity that drives collector value. Once a piece is retired the mold is set aside, supply stops, and demand shifts to the secondary market. Mint condition Department 56 pieces have historically appreciated on the order of 20 to 30 percent on average, with iconic items climbing much higher, and for a culturally beloved line like Harry Potter that demand runs especially deep. Both pieces in this set are retired, and both had an unusually short life: introduced in 2019 and retired in 2020, a single year of production each. The Hogwart's Express in particular has become one of the most sought-after pieces in the entire line, being both the signature object of the whole franchise and a large lighted set that many collectors passed over at the time on price alone.
