This is an original commemorative lead printing plate marking the final day of hot-metal letterpress production at The Miami Herald. The plate reads:

In 1982, major metropolitan newspapers across the United States were transitioning from traditional hot-metal lead typesetting to modern photocomposition and offset printing. This plate represents the end of an era — the conclusion of nearly a century of lead-based newspaper production.

Unlike ordinary production plates, this example was clearly cast as a ceremonial “last run” artifact and preserved. It is solid lead, deeply cast, and retains its authentic industrial patina.

Provenance

From my late father's estate. He worked in the newspaper industry for more than 50 years and kept many items in his private printing-industry collection. His collection included historical press artifacts and memorabilia from the era of lead typesetting. This plate was preserved as a commemorative final casting marking the end of hot-metal production.
