Antique English Ironstone Wash Basin Bowl Floral Cinnamon Transferware 16.5"

Description

Beautiful large antique wash basin featuring a delicate reddish-brown floral transferware pattern of carnation-like blossoms and foliage scattered around the interior. The basin has a warm creamy-white ground, gently scalloped rim and substantial deep form characteristic of late 19th- to early 20th-century washstand pieces.

The understated floral decoration and aged crazing give the basin wonderful character. Originally intended as part of a bedroom washstand or pitcher-and-basin set, today it would make an impressive decorative centerpiece, oversized serving/display bowl, farmhouse décor piece, or addition to an antique transferware collection.

Origin: Probably English; unconfirmed unless a manufacturer's mark is present.

Estimated age: I would tentatively place it around 1880–1920, although a photograph of the underside/backstamp could potentially narrow this considerably.


Condition

Good antique condition with expected evidence of age and use. There is one small old dark chip along the rim, visible in the photographs. The glaze exhibits overall fine crazing consistent with age, along with minor discoloration, small marks and normal surface wear. The transfer decoration shows some age-related wear/fading.
