An exceptional factory-sealed example of vintage Playmobil #3589 Two Astronauts with Cart, from the original Playmospace series and issued for the U.S. market by Schaper.

Originally introduced circa 1980/81, this compact Playmospace set features two blue-suited astronauts outfitted for lunar exploration, together with their equipment cart and an assortment of colorful space tools and accessories. Collector references document Set 3589 as an early Playmospace release containing two figures. 

This particular example remains factory sealed and has never been opened or played with. Both original tape seals remain intact.

Klickypedia documents the general 3589 set as entering production in 1980, with the reference remaining in the Playmospace assortment for a number of years. 

Features

This is classic first-generation Playmospace design, with two astronauts wearing the wonderfully retro blue, white, silver and red space suits, complete with oversized helmets, metallic cuffs and boots, backpack equipment and blue beacon lights.

The astronauts are accompanied by a small wheeled equipment cart filled with brightly colored exploration/mining tools—exactly the sort of imaginative accessory set designed to expand the larger Space Station and vehicle sets.

The original box is also particularly appealing. Its dramatic lunar photography, saturated blue Playmobil graphics and “Schaper A Play Set” branding identify it as a U.S.-market release.

The reverse incorporates Schaper’s yellow “Guaranteed Fun Or Your Money Back” promotion and shows Set 3589 incorporated into a much larger Playmospace lunar scene.

Condition

The box is in excellent vintage condition, especially considering its age. There is minor shelf/storage wear, including light rubbing, small surface marks and modest edge/corner wear. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.

Most importantly, the original tape seals remain intact on both sides. The clear tape has naturally yellowed with age but has not been broken.

Provenance

This set comes from a single-family personal collection rather than leftover retail inventory. It was purchased new by the original owner for her children but never opened. The family’s collection moved with them from Washington, D.C. to South Carolina in 1993, remained stored for decades, and was rediscovered in 2026.
