KIPLING, Rudyard. Rudyard Kipling’s Uncollected Verse, Inclusive Edition, 1881–1922. Captain E.W. Martindell. Printed for Private Circulation, circa 1923-1924. Edition of 12 copies, this one is 7/12.

Small 8vo. Original grey paper boards with brown cloth spine, printed paper label to upper board reading “UNCOLLECTED VERSE / 1881–1922. / RUDYARD KIPLING.”; frontispiece photographic portrait of Kipling, 1882 (W.C. Crofts Collection), tipped in. 185 pages followed by glossary, index to first lines

LIMITATION: One of only twelve copies printed, this copy unnumbered 7/12. Signed in ink by the printer, John M. Stott, with the note: “Twelve copies only of this book have been printed, solely for presentation, and the type distributed.”

PROVENANCE: Inscribed by Miss E.M. Martindell, presented to “Mrs Munro,” 13 April 1951 — almost certainly a family disposal from the library of Captain E.W. Martindell (1875–1962), barrister and pioneering Kipling bibliographer, author of A Bibliography of the Works of Rudyard Kipling, 1881–1921 (1922; expanded 1923), whose bibliography included an appendix of “Uncollected Contributions” corresponding to the date range and subject matter of the present pamphlet.

NOTE: An apparently unrecorded private printing, not listed in Livingston, Martindell’s own published bibliography, Stewart, or the Ashley Library catalogue. Given the extreme rarity of the issue (twelve copies, type distributed) and its direct association with Martindell’s own bibliographical researches, this pamphlet may represent Martindell’s private working compilation of the uncollected verse he catalogued only by title in his published bibliography — printed for his own circle rather than for sale or public record.

A true Kipling treasure.
