Glimpses of Maori Land - Annie R Butler, scarce 1886 illustrated 1st edition
A scarce first edition. In writing of her experiences on a visit to New Zealand in the 1880s the author concedes that time constraints left "much unseen and undone". However, her resultant book does offer clear accounts of life in NZ in those times, with particular attention to the Maori people.
After describing the three month voyage to NZ from England in two chapters the author divides her experiences in NZ into 19 chapters, the first three devoted to Wellington, followed by Wanganui and impressions of a Maori Village, a sheep run, the NZ bush, a visit to the East Coast and Hawkes Bay, Auckland and the Waikato with the final chapter headed "Last Hours in New Zealand." A school for Maori girls and another for Maori boys was included in the itinerary.
While a missionary theme runs through the book, this not to the detriment of more general observations on NZ society, the Maori people, agriculture , industry and contrasting country life with the larger towns and cities. The frontispiece of "Maori Whares or Native Houses" is replicated in gilt on the front cover.
Hardback, frontispiece and nine b/w ill., 260pp.
