Late Qing Dynasty Peking Zhengyangmen Gatehouse Westerner Chinese Men Queues
You are bidding on a
vintage image from my collection.
an original vintage photo
This historical snapshot from late Imperial China captures a scene at the base of the iconic Zhengyangmen Gatehouse, also known as Qianmen, in Beijing. Taken around the period of the Boxer Rebellion, the image depicts a Western traveler or diplomat standing among local Chinese residents. The local men are seen with their hair styled in the traditional queues mandated during the Qing Dynasty. The man on left side carrying a long stem clay pipe.
The gatehouse structure in the background shows signs of structural weathering from this turbulent historical era. This image offers a compelling look at early travel and cultural intersection in East Asia at the turn of the twentieth century.
First constructed in 1419 during the Ming Dynasty, it served as the massive southern defensive gatehouse separating the inner "Tartar" City from the outer "Chinese" City. It stood directly on the central historical axis leading straight toward the Forbidden City.
