Of Men & Machines: The Story of Spencer Shops – Vintage Railroad VHS
Vintage railroad documentary telling the story of the historic Spencer Shops in Spencer, North Carolina, one of the important railroad repair facilities of the Southern Railway.
The program explores not only the history of the shops and the locomotives that were maintained there, but also the people who brought the railroad facility to life. It looks at the long-lost trades and skills once practiced at Spencer and the efforts to preserve and restore the historic machinery and buildings.
Today, the former Spencer Shops site is well known as the home of the North Carolina Transportation Museum, making this an interesting early documentary for railroad historians and collectors interested in Southern Railway history, steam locomotives, railroad shops, restoration and preservation.
