Background: On the eve of Prohibition’s end, December 4, 1933, the United States was suspended in a state of electric anticipation as the nation prepared to dismantle the 13-year "Noble Experiment" of the 18th Amendment. Distilleries, breweries, and wineries had been working around-the-clock shifts for weeks to stock warehouses and fill delivery trucks, which stood lined up at state borders ready to supply thirsty cities the second the law officially shifted. Underground speakeasies across major metros like New York, Chicago, and San Francisco operated openly, preparing to drop their hidden doorways and reopen as newly licensed, legitimate taverns, while law enforcement effectively stood down and ceased raiding parties for contraband that would be legal within hours. All eyes were fixed on the ratification map: 35 states had approved the 21st Amendment—leaving the country waiting on Utah, scheduled to assemble the following afternoon as the decisive 36th state required to seal the three-fourths majority and officially end the dry era.
