Toma Model Works No. 1581 assembly kit recreating Monson Railroad No. 3, a Vulcan-built Forney steam locomotive that operated on Maine’s historic two-foot narrow-gauge railway system.

This 2026 edition is designed for HOn30, HOe and 009 layouts using 9 mm gauge track. It features a UV-cured 3D-printed plastic body with the smokebox, cab, bunker and handrails formed as an integrated component. The partially detailed cab interior is also included.

The factory-assembled and black-finished drive chassis is equipped with a 12V coreless motor and M0.2 reduction gearing for smooth, realistic operation at very low speeds. The 2026 version has an approximately 1.3-times faster speed setting than the previous version. Its two-point suspension helps maintain wheel contact over uneven track.

The locomotive can negotiate curves as tight as R103 when operated alone. The practical minimum radius while pulling rolling stock will depend on the rear coupler and the connected car. A prototype model successfully operated through R177 while pulling a 28-foot freight car.

Included components:

Assembly requires adhesives, an M1.4 tap, a 1.0 mm drill and standard plastic-modeling tools. Additional ballast weight is essential for operation and is not included. The body can be finished with plastic-compatible primer and paint.

An appealing collectible model-train kit for narrow-gauge railway enthusiasts, Maine two-footer collectors and builders of detailed HOn30, HOe or 009 layouts.
