Special Derwent Dam Keswick 50th ann Dambusters Raid postmark. Warrant Officer Ernest Crosse (E.C.) Temple, DFM, was a British Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve air gunner who flew with the famous No. 617 Squadron ("The Dambusters") during World War II. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM), which was gazetted on November 12, 1943. The Bergen Raid (January 12, 1945): He flew aboard Lancaster Mk I PD233 (flown by Flight Lieutenant Henry John Pryor), which took off from RAF Woodhall Spa to attack U-boat pens in Bergen, Norway, using a massive 12,000-lb Tallboy bomb.Prisoner of War: During this mission, the aircraft was lost or crashed in Norway. Temple survived the crash and became a Prisoner of War (PoW), while some of his crewmates tragically perished.
