Original WWI German Leather Carrier for Small Entrenching Tool / Shovel Cover Imperial Army 1915-1918
**WW1 German Pioneer / Infantry Spade Carrier Frame Type Leather – 1915 Pattern Shovel Cover
WWI German Leather Frame-Type Carrier for Small Entrenching Tool (Kleines Schanzzeug)
Up for sale is an original, 100% authentic German leather carrier (cover / frame) for a small infantry or pioneer spade. This type was introduced in 1915 to reduce weight and was standard issue for the Imperial German Army during the Great War.
Function: Designed to carry a small entrenching tool (Klappspaten) on the waist belt.
Frame-type construction: Unlike full-leather covers, this one secures only the edges (wings) of the shovel blade, leaving the central part exposed. This was a deliberate weight-saving measure.
Attachment: The spade is inserted from the top and secured at the bottom by a leather strap with an original steel buckle.
Material: Thick, high-quality natural brown leather, typical of German field gear from 1915–1918.
Hardware: Period steel fittings with original patina. The buckle works perfectly.
Primary issue: 1915 – 1918 (WWI – Kaiser’s Army).
Continued use: Many of these carriers were re-issued and used again during WWII (1939–1945), making this piece perfect for both WWI and early WWII reenactment or display.
Used / original patina. The leather is solid, with natural aging, darkening, and minor surface wear consistent with age and field use.
No major tears, rot, or broken stitching.
Leather retaining strap with buckle is fully intact and functional.
Maker stamp is legible and visible (see clear photos).
Please check all photos carefully, as they are part of the description.
Carrier only. The entrenching tool (shovel) is NOT included.
