The American Tobacco Company was a giant tobacco trust founded in 1890 by James B. Duke, which came to control most of the U.S. cigarette and tobacco market before being broken up by the Supreme Court in 1911 and eventually evolving out of the tobacco industry entirely.
Rise and Monopoly
- Founding: Created in January 1890 in Durham, North Carolina, by J.B. Duke through the merger of major firms like Allen & Ginter and Kinney Brothers.
- Dominance: Bought out more than 200 rival companies and monopolized national production of cigarettes, plug tobacco, and snuff.
- Dow Jones: Served as one of the original 12 members of the Dow Jones Industrial Average in 1896.
- Antitrust Suit: Regulators filed charges under the Sherman Antitrust Act in 1907.
- Supreme Court Ruling: The Court ordered the firm dissolved in 1911, splitting it into major successor companies including R.J. Reynolds, Liggett & Myers, and P. Lorillard.
- Lucky Strike & Pall Mall: Introduced or scaled iconic brands like Lucky Strike (1916) and Pall Mall (1939), dominating mid-century cigarette sales.
- Name Change: Renamed American Brands in 1969 as it diversified into non-tobacco goods.
- Final Departure: Fully exited the tobacco business, transforming into Fortune Brands. Its historic American Tobacco Campus in Durham now operates as a mixed-use public and commercial space
