Antique or Vintage Leather Albert Chain or Pocket Watch Fob Strap Early-Mid 1900’s.

This style of leather pocket watch strap originated as a distinct utilitarian and military design.

The style's popularity began in the early 1880s, while traditional metal "Albert chains" gained massive popularity during the Victorian era, leather watch straps became highly prominent in the late 19th century and during World War I (1914–1918). Soldiers and officers needed a rugged, non-reflective, and quiet material that wouldn't gleam or clink in the trenches like gold or silver.

The clasp mechanism is an unusual lobster clasp with a ribbed base and is attached to the black leather using a triangular bale. The T-bar attaches to the other end of the strap again using the stylish triangular bale.

         I believe this example falls into the late stages of production. There are no maker marks.

The leather pocket watch fob strap measures approx. 21cm in length.

A great usable collectable.
