Introduction
It is a grey autumn afternoon in the first Charms
lesson of the school year, deep inside Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the
Sorcerer's Stone. Tiny Professor Flitwick teeters atop his tall stack of books,
a white feather rests on every desk, and the whole classroom hums with the
nervous excitement of first years about to try real magic for the very first
time. Rain taps the tall windows, quills scratch, and somewhere a cauldron of
anticipation is about to boil over.
Remember the words, Flitwick squeaks. Swish and
flick, and do enunciate. Down the row, Hermione Granger sets her jaw, gives her
wand the crispest little flourish, and speaks the incantation as though she has
practiced it a hundred times in the mirror, because of course she has. Her
feather lifts, wobbles, and rises steadily toward the rafters while the class
gasps.
Beside her, Ron Weasley jabs and slashes at his
own stubborn feather, growing redder by the second, until Hermione cannot help
herself: It's Levi-O-sa, not Levio-SA. The correction stings, the friendship
frays, and later that night it takes a full grown mountain troll loose in the
dungeons to turn three quarreling classmates into the friends we would follow
for seven books.
This is the moment the magic stopped being
something that happened to other people and started belonging to us. Hold this

and demand shifts to the secondary market. Mint condition Department 56 pieces
have historically appreciated on the order of 20 to 30 percent on average, with
