This lovely antique Indian kharale, or mortar and pestle, would have once been central to Indian village life in Rajasthan in the 19th c. Today, no doubt, it's destined to be employed in a contemporary 21st century kitchen environment.

The mortar has been hand-carved from single pieces of black granite from Rajasthan's Aravelli Hills, a mountain range that was formed 1.8 billion years ago, and even older than the Himalayas.

We often source them mortars without pestles, probably because these are both heavy and substantial, and difficult to mislay. Unlike the lighter pestles? The related pestle here is new, and been turned from an Indian tropical hardwood.
