Fine Mid-20th Century Nepalese Gilt Brass Bodhisattva Seated in Royal Ease. c. 1945 - 1965.

A beautifully cast Nepalese gilt brass Bodhisattva, produced by Newar craftsmen of the Kathmandu Valley during the mid-20th century, depicted seated in bhadrasana (the royal ease posture) upon an elaborate stepped throne with finely modelled lotus footrests.

The serene face, elongated eyes and refined proportions display the elegant sculptural tradition for which Kathmandu workshops became renowned. The richly ornamented crown, necklaces and armlets retain their original coloured cabochon inlays, creating a striking contrast against the warm gilt surface.

The figure has acquired a particularly attractive devotional patina through decades of careful handling. Natural wear to the gilding across the chest, knees, forearms and hands is entirely consistent with long-term shrine use and gives the sculpture an authenticity that cannot be reproduced.

The throne is exceptionally well cast, with scrolling foliate ornament, beaded borders and graceful lotus supports beneath both feet. The hollow open base is typical of Newar lost-wax casting and confirms traditional Nepalese manufacture.

Unlike many later commercial reproductions, this example displays refined facial modelling, excellent casting quality and elegant proportions throughout, making it an especially appealing devotional sculpture.

A handsome and decorative Himalayan Buddhist bronze that would grace any collection of Nepalese or Tibetan Buddhist art.
