This is a small plate from Aizu Hongo ware. There are some scuff marks and a chip on the base; please check the images. There is some crazing throughout, but this is due to the firing process and is not a defect.
It features a landscape painting and a poem about the moon, written in underglaze blue.
This small plate features Aizu Hongo-style blue and white glaze and is made of white clay with many impurities.
It is believed to be from the late Edo period to the Meiji era.
The history of Aizu Hongo ware ↓
It is said that the origin of this practice dates back to 1593, when Gamo Ujisato called in craftsmen from Harima to fire roof tiles for the renovation of Wakamatsu Castle (present-day Tsuruga Castle).
Around 1645, the daimyo Hoshina Masayuki (founder of the Aizu Matsudaira family) invited the potter Mizuno Genzaemon from Seto, and pottery production began.
In 1777, potter Kondo Heikichi was invited from Edo to provide technical guidance on porcelain production in Aizu. Furthermore, in 1797, Sato Ihei traveled to Arita in Hizen Province to learn porcelain firing techniques. This shows the domain's high expectations for porcelain production at the time. Ihei became a servant at the family temple of the Nabeshima domain, gaining the trust of those around him. He frequented the kilns in Arita, learning in detail how to mix pottery stone, glazes, and pigments, and returned to Japan. In 1790, he successfully fired porcelain. Ihei is enshrined in the pottery founder's mausoleum at Joshōji Temple as the founder of Aizu Hongō porcelain, along with the founder of pottery Mizuno Genzaemon. The emergence of porcelain was a groundbreaking event. Although pottery had been produced with the domain's protection, it could not yet be considered a domain industry. However, with the success of porcelain, it became an important national industry as a domain pottery industry.
Furthermore, a Seto office was established under the town magistrate, and Ihei was appointed as the Seto porcelain maker. As the system was improved and expanded in this way, the technology also improved, and during the Bunsei era, Teshigogi Koemon succeeded in seme firing (reduction firing), finally achieving the firing of white porcelain. Also, Kato Heihachi, a potter from Aizu, developed the technique of underglaze blue and white painting during the Bunkyu era, and painter Saito Io taught him the techniques of painting landscapes and flowers, and Kyoto painter Mokichi taught him the Nishikide firing method, completing Aizu porcelain.
