Joseph Gurney Cannon (1836-1926), commonly known as "Uncle Joe," was an American politician who served as a U.S. Representative from Illinois for nearly five decades. He served as Speaker of the House from 1903 to 1911, becoming one of the most powerful congressional leaders in American history. Cannon exercised extraordinary control over House committees and legislation during his tenure, helping shape the modern speakership. He remained an influential Republican statesman well into the twentieth century.
