This is an unassembled Japanese metalworking and mechanical engineering educational kit called the “Baby Elephant.”

The kit was originally produced for use in technical education classes and demonstrates the basic principles of an external-combustion steam engine.

Water is placed inside the brass boiler and heated using solid fuel. The generated steam operates a single-cylinder oscillating steam engine, which transfers power through a flywheel and reduction gears to drive the wheels.

This is not a scale model of a specific real locomotive and does not have an established scale or railway gauge.

The kit includes metal parts, a brass boiler, wheels, gears, engine components, hardware, the original box, and the Japanese assembly manual.

Assembly requires metalworking skills and tools, including drilling, tapping, cutting, bending, soldering, filing, and mechanical adjustment.

The item is unassembled and has not been tested. Due to long-term storage, the metal parts may show tarnishing, oxidation, scratches, or discoloration. The original box and manual show age-related wear.
