An impressive antique Nepalese bronze depicting Manjushri, the revered Bodhisattva of Transcendent Wisdom, seated in vajraparyankasana (full lotus posture) upon a finely cast double-lotus throne. Four-armed representations of Manjushri are among the most revered forms in Vajrayana Buddhism and are closely associated with the celebrated Newar bronze-casting traditions of the Kathmandu Valley.
This elegant sculpture displays many hallmarks of traditional Newar craftsmanship, including a serene oval face with elongated almond eyes, an elaborate five-point crown, finely incised jewellery, a richly ornamented flaming aureole and a beautifully modelled double-lotus pedestal.
The bronze has acquired a warm, mellow patina over many decades of ritual handling, complemented by natural verdigris within the recessed details that enhances both its authenticity and visual appeal.
The open base reveals traditional sand-cast construction and hand-finishing, consistent with late nineteenth to early twentieth-century Nepalese workshop production. Cast in a high-copper bronze alloy rather than modern brass, it possesses the rich brown tones and subtle surface character sought by collectors of Himalayan art.
The sculpture displays an elegant and balanced composition, with a finely modelled expression conveying serenity, compassion and spiritual wisdom.
