Antique Thai Gilt Bronze Crowned Jambupati Buddha, Rattanakosin period. c.1890 - 1915.

A beautifully modelled antique Thai gilt bronze Buddha seated in meditation, depicted in the rare and highly symbolic crowned form known as the Jambupati Buddha. 

Richly adorned with an elaborate tiered crown, jewelled chest ornament and coloured glass inlays, the image represents the Buddha manifesting as the Universal Monarch to demonstrate the supremacy of spiritual wisdom over earthly power.

The figure retains extensive original fire gilding with attractive, naturally worn surfaces developed through age and devotional use. Fine hand-chased detailing is evident throughout the crown, jewellery and costume, while traces of original coloured glass inlay remain within the armlets and chest decoration.  A feature seen on higher-quality Thai devotional bronzes.

The back is neatly finished, suggesting it was made as a fully sculptural image rather than simply for a niche.The underside retains original temple clay infill and displays an untouched aged patina, supporting its authenticity as a late nineteenth- to early twentieth-century devotional bronze.

An elegant and increasingly sought-after example of Thai Buddhist art, equally suited to a serious Southeast Asian collection or as a striking display piece.
