This was purchased from a Japanese antique dealer.
It is the koshirae (mountings) for what appears to be a Japanese wakizashi (short sword). It comes with the saya (scabbard), tsuka (hilt), and tsuba (handguard).
Its greatest feature is the carving on the hilt, which depicts a dragon and is extremely exquisite!
Typically, it is very rare to find carvings directly on the hilt, making this a highly uncommon and rare item!
If the blade itself were still with it, it might have been an exceptionally rare find.
However, the koshirae alone is highly unusual and a true rarity, so to all Japanese sword fittings collectors, please take this opportunity to acquire it! I doubt you will ever find another one like it!
