Up for sale is a genuine antique cornet made by J.W. York & Sons of Grand Rapids, Michigan — the “Al-Tru” model. This is a scarce find: the model was patented in 1913 and only produced for about a year, with known serial numbers in the 36000-39000 range, right where this horn falls. The third valve casing is even stamped “PATENT PENDING,” suggesting very early production before the patent was formally granted.

The bell is hand-engraved with detailed scroll and floral work along with the “AL-TRU” model name, and carries a “Union Label” stamp (MPBPB & SWU — Metal Polishers, Buffers, Platers and Brass Workers & Silver Workers Union), typical of quality American-made brass of this era.

Condition:

• Chemically cleaned only — no aggressive or mechanical polishing

• All 3 valves move freely

• All slides (main tuning and valve) move freely

• Minor cosmetic dings and dents consistent with age — see photos

• Original silver plate with expected patina/brassing — not replated

• No cracks, splits, or repairs noted

Includes: Horn only. No case or mouthpiece.

Great opportunity for a collector chasing a short-production York model, or a player looking for a genuine, functional pre-WWI American cornet. A full valve/slide service is recommended before regular playing.
