INTRODUCTION
IT will be noted that a considerable rearrangement in the order of presentation of the various classes has been effected in this revised edition of The Observer's Book of Locomotives. In former editions the engines were grouped as far as possible into the Regional divisional system adopted by British Railways in 194.8. This, however, was by no means an ideal system, even in the earlier stages when the newly formed Regions roughly
corresponded to the lines of the former four main.
groups, for six Regions were formed out of four railways, the L.N.E.R. being divided amongst two newly formed Regions, the Eastern and the North Eastern, whilst the Scottish Region was composed partly of former L.M.S. and L.N.E.R. lines.
