Description

Early Ben Wade, c1965-71
By Charatan's or DUNHILL
LONDON ENGLAND 34, Pot
Tight Birdseye & Cross-Grain
Saddle Stem, Great Shape

Offering a classic design Ben Wade brand, which was made in London England. It’s likely during the Charatan era, or possibly Dunhill ownership era. These pipes are somewhat rare and not well understood, and they were made from the timeframe of 1965-1971, when they were produced by the famous English pipe company of Charatan, who was then owned by Lane Ltd. The pipe has mostly tight birdseye and cross-grain, and is a large bowl pot. It looks like a Charatan design. It’s also in really nice condition, there’s just a small burn on the right outer rim, and the rest of the pipe shows pretty much no wear. I included a photo of a Charatan catalog page, which shows both Charatan and Ben Wade together. The bowl interior is in good condition, well-seasoned with a thin cake, and the draw hole bottom center, should be a good smoker with thick walls! The stem is still faintly marked BEN WADE on top, is made of vulcanite and has no noted wear. Weights in around 1.6 ounces. Freshly polished and ready to smoke!

Please see my other Auctions! Combined shipping of multiple items no problem, wait until auctions end to pay, and I’ll send a combined invoice! Additional cleaning may be desired on some pipes, as I focus on the exterior reconditioning and reaming, and leave the shank interior to the new owner, pipe stand not included with any pipe. Click photos BELOW to enlarge, and see more photos! Returns OK before you smoke any pipe.

Pipes bearing the label Ben Wade were made in Leeds, England, at least as early as 1922. The Leeds company was purchased by Charatan in 1965, which itself had been purchased by Lane Ltd in 1962. In this period, production of Ben Wade pipes in the UK moved to London, and for a brief time under Dunhill.
As of 1965, Lane Ltd effectively owned the rights to the Ben Wade label in the U.S. and famous Danish pipemaker Preben Holm made pipes bearing this label for Lane from about 1972-89.
