Press Photo Massive drill rig used for pipe, valve section of Alaska pipeline
This massive drilling rig is being used to drill holes which will receive vertical support members (VSM) for a 150-foot-long pipe and valve section of the trans Alaska pipeline. The section, located near Fairbanks, will include 140 feet of 48-inch pipe and 1 10-foot wide, 60,000 pound valve. Some 80,000 VSM's will be used to support the above-ground sections of the pipeline. Approximately half of the 789-mile pipeline will be above ground. Alyeska Pipeline Service Company is in the firm responsible for the design, construction and operation of the pipeline.
