A vintage Indian wood panel depicting Arjuna's golden chariot of Mahabharata with Lord Krishna. A meditation aid for devotees and yogis that has been hand-crafted in tropical hardwood. 20th c.
Depicted in this vintage hand-carved panel is Krishna at the reins of Arjuna'a golden chariot taken from the Mahabharata, one of India's two great epic poems. ILLUSTRATED IN IMAGES 5 & 6.
For devotees, the scene is deeply symbolic and a valuable meditation aid on the path to self-realisation.
The body is represented by the chariot. The indriyas, the senses, are the horses. The manas, the mind, are the reins. And the buddhi, or intellect, is the saarthi, the charioteer.
For a balanced and firm ride, the saarthi has to be in control of both the mind, the reins, and the senses, the horses.
The senses have a tendency to indulge, and yoga practice helps in the withdrawal of the waywardness of the senses, and towards discovery of the self. Meditation on the panel helps in this respect.
The panel itself depicts Krishna as the charioteer in charges of the reins with Arjuna behind. Four horses are depicted to the right of the panel.
This panel was one of four companion panels recently sourced together. Two of this subject matter. SHOWN TOGETHER IN IMAGES 9, 14, 15 & THE LAST IMAGE. And two panels panels of Vishnu and his avatars. THIS IS THE LAST PANEL AVAILABLE, THE OTHER THREE NOW SOLD.
Please look carefully at the photographs as they form part of the description. Hanging bracket inset verso. Please note there is some damage to Arjuna, not recent and probably done at the time of carving. IMAGE 16.
