A pair of antique Indian bronzes of standing Buddhas displaying different mudras. Lost wax castings with aged patination from decades of ritual handling. 19th c.
The second is the Teaching Buddha displaying the Dharmachakra Mudra, the gesture of teaching. Literally, Dharma means law, Chakra means wheel. This gesture is generally interpreted as turning the Wheel of Law.
In this gesture, both hands are held against the chest, the left hand facing inwards, covering the right hand facing out. The index and thumb of each hand form a circle.
Significantly, this was the gesture exhibited by the Buddha whilst preaching his first sermon at Sarnath.
Please look carefully at the photographs as they form part of the description.
