A vintage Sino-Tibetan brass statue of a Buddhist monk displaying the Vitarka mudra, the gesture argument, seated on a lotus pedestal. Mid-20th c. Possibly earlier?
On offer here is a large brass statue of a Buddhist monk displaying the Vitarka mudra, the gesture argument. In this gesture the tips of thumb and index finger touch to form a circle. All other fingers extend upwards. In Tibet and Nepal, this is the mystic gesture of Taras and Bodhisattvas.
This beautiful brass statue originated in Sino-Tibet, and dates to the mid-20th c, perhaps earlier, with wear and patination commensurate with age. Worthy of special mention is the traditional Tibetan headdress perched high on the monk's head.
