A highly sculptural, Mewar horse head. Finished in a distressed turquoise colour palette, displaying wonderful patination. A highly sculptural decorator's piece. Mid-19th c.
TWO AVAILABLE. A COMPANION PAIR, PRICED AND SOLD INDIVIDUALLY.
Sourced from Rajasthan, these highly decorative horse head started life as one of a pair either side of a doorway in a haveli, or merchant's mansion, circa 1850. These hand-sculpted artefacts are becoming increasingly difficult to source, particularly painted in decorative and vibrant colours.
In a previous incarnation, horse heads of this type were also fixed to exterior door posts to ward off spirits and offer protection and strength for the occupants within.
We personally witnessed pairs of horse heads playing just such a role in Sonagiri, a complex of impeccably maintained Jain temples in India's Bundelkhand region, and in Dungarpur, Rajasthan. IMAGES 14 & 15 -17 RESPECTIVELY.
This listing is for the one of two horse head in a distressed turquoise colour palette as seen in the lead image. AND IMAGES 2- 13. Made from the tropical hardwood, close grain teak, with later metal bracket verso for attaching to a wall..
