This brain anatomy model is manufactured by Kyoto Scientific Specimens Co., Ltd., which succeeded the Shimadzu Corporation's Specimen Headquarters in 1948. Based on the early notation “Successor to Shimadzu Corporation Specimen Headquarters” on the base label and the material feel characteristic of pre-plastic eras, it is presumed to be a vintage piece manufactured around 1948-1950, shortly after the company's founding. Unlike the lightweight PVC products of recent years, it possesses a substantial weight (715g) reminiscent of plaster or composition (molded material), characterized by a deep texture achieved through hand-painting by artisans. It is an item of high documentary value, evoking the history of science education in Japan. This specimen can be disassembled beyond the right and left brain halves into finer sections. Internal structures such as the corpus callosum, ventricles, cerebellum, and brainstem can be observed in three dimensions. Hand-applied numbered stickers remain on each part, conveying the atmosphere of past medical education settings.
Overall, discoloration, stains, and paint marks due to aging are visible.
Acquisition explanation
The green liquid is "verdigris" (copper rust) formed on the metal parts inside the model, which has mixed with moisture and old adhesive and seeped out.
