This is an exceptionally rare, museum-grade pair of two authentic antique Japanese hanging scrolls (Diptych / Pair of 2 Scrolls) featuring a traditional hand-painted masterwork on silk of "The Tale of Genji" (Genji Monogatari), the pinnacle of classical Japanese literature. The scenes elegantly portray Heian court nobles in lavish costumes within a grand palace alongside a serene landscape covered in pristine winter snow. Masterfully crafted during the Early Edo period, this priceless set of genuine historical fine art proudly bears the hand-inked signature "Tosa Shogen Mitsuoki hitsu" (土佐将監光起筆) and his distinctive gourd-shaped red seal. It comes complete with a premium wooden storage box designed to hold both scrolls safely together. The artist, Tosa Mitsuoki (1617–1691), was the legendary 16th-generation head of the Tosa school who served as the official chief painter (Edokoro Azukari) for the Imperial Court and brilliantly revived the school by infusing classical Yamato-e traditions with refined realistic elements. This masterpiece perfectly exhibits his supreme nobility, meticulous composition, and sophisticated use of negative space and courtly pigments. Radiating an extraordinary sense of traditional Japanese high aristocracy and literary romance, this complete pair serves as an ultimate centerpiece for museum collections or high-end luxury antique displays.

Condition : Considering its immense historical age dating back to the Early Edo period, this pair is in relatively good antique condition and has been remarkably well-preserved over the centuries. As a genuine period antique of several hundred years old, there are overall visible signs of historical wear and aging, such as characteristic stains, minor accumulation of ancient dirt, rubbing, natural pigment settling, and rolling creases.
