Han Dynasty Four-Zhu Ban Liang (四銖半兩) Cash Coin – GBCA AU85 Certified – Early Han Empire – Foundation of Imperial China
A Coin from the Birth of One of History’s Greatest Empires
Offered here is an authentic Four-Zhu Ban Liang (四銖半兩) bronze coin issued during the Han Dynasty, one of the most influential periods in Chinese civilization and world history.
Certified by GBCA and graded AU85, this remarkable artifact originates from an era when the newly established Han Empire was transforming a war-torn land into one of the ancient world’s greatest political, economic, and cultural powers.
The Story Behind the Coin
More than two thousand years ago, China emerged from one of the most turbulent periods in its history.
The Qin Dynasty had unified the Warring States and created China’s first centralized empire, introducing standardized weights, measures, writing systems, and coinage. Yet the Qin Empire collapsed almost as quickly as it had risen.
Out of the chaos emerged Liu Bang, founder of the Han Dynasty.
The Han rulers inherited the Qin monetary system but sought to stabilize and reform the empire’s economy. One result was the issuance of the Four-Zhu Ban Liang coin, a lighter and more practical version of earlier Qin-era Ban Liang pieces.
This coin represents that transition.
It circulated during the formative decades of the Han Empire as imperial institutions, trade networks, taxation systems, and military frontiers were being established.
The Coin That Helped Build an Empire
The inscription “Ban Liang” literally refers to a unit of weight and reflects the close relationship between currency and standardized measures in ancient China.
The Four-Zhu Ban Liang became one of the most important monetary reforms of the early Han period.
Merchants carried these coins along roads connecting cities, frontier settlements, military garrisons, and agricultural communities.
Officials used them to collect taxes.
Soldiers received them as payment.
Farmers exchanged them in local markets.
Every surviving example serves as a witness to the rise of the Han Empire.
A World Being Connected
When this coin circulated:
• The Han Dynasty was consolidating control across China.
• Imperial institutions that would influence East Asia for centuries were being established.
• Trade routes linking northern China with Central Asia were beginning to develop.
• The foundations of what would later become the Silk Road were being laid.
The Han Empire would eventually become so influential that the majority ethnic group of China still identifies itself as the “Han People” today.
This small bronze coin belongs to the very beginning of that extraordinary story.
