Offered from a private collection is an exceptional 19th century French Cartel wall clock in the Louis XVI style, distinguished by its rare maritime allegorical decoration and high-quality Paris movement by Pinchon Fils Aîné. This important ormolu timepiece was previously sold through Hindman Auctions, adding further provenance and collector significance.

Expertly cast in gilt bronze (ormolu) with original mercury gilding, the case displays remarkable sculptural depth and preservation. The upper section features an elaborate classical figural group depicting Chronos (Father Time) accompanied by a female figure holding a flaming torch while leaning against a cornucopia — symbols traditionally associated with time, abundance, and enlightenment.

What sets this example apart from more conventional floral cartel clocks is its highly unusual maritime iconography. The lower body is adorned with crossed nautical implements including an anchor and boat hook bound with rope, surrounded by flowing acanthus leaves and water lily motifs. This rare naval allegory significantly enhances the clock’s desirability among collectors of maritime antiques and specialized French decorative arts.

The white enamel dial retains elegant Roman hour numerals with Arabic minute markers and finely pierced gilt brass hands. The movement is a quality 8-day brass mechanism signed:

Excellent antique condition overall. Original ormolu gilding remains exceptionally well preserved with attractive contrast between matte and burnished surfaces. Fine surface scratches are visible on the dial glass, but the enamel itself appears intact. Casting remains crisp with no visible structural losses or major damage. Enamel dial appears clean without significant hairlines or major chips around winding apertures.

Mechanical:
Movement appears complete and authentic. Original bell and winding key remain present. Balance wheel and hairspring appear intact and visually clean. As expected for antique clocks of this age, professional servicing/cleaning is recommended prior to regular operation, remains in complete working condition.

Authentication:
Original Hindman auction tags remain attached. Movement backplate retains clearly stamped maker’s mark.
