This is SAND LAND by Akira Toriyama, the legendary creator of Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump.
SAND LAND is a science fiction adventure manga set in a mysterious desert world where both humans and demons suffer from a severe water shortage. The story follows Beelzebub, the prince of demons, who joins forces with an elderly human sheriff named Rao and a clever demon named Thief. Together, they travel across the desert in search of the Legendary Spring, a hidden water source that may save the people of Sand Land.
The world of SAND LAND features Akira Toriyama’s signature charm, including unique character designs, humorous storytelling, detailed vehicles, tanks, machines, and exciting desert adventure scenes. Although it is a short one-volume manga, it is highly regarded as one of Toriyama’s memorable works outside of Dragon Ball.
SAND LAND was originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2000 and later published as a single-volume manga. It was also adapted into an animated film in 2023 and the streaming anime series SAND LAND: THE SERIES in 2024.
Beelzebub is the main character of SAND LAND and the prince of demons. Although he is a demon, he is playful, curious, mischievous, and surprisingly pure-hearted. His energetic personality makes him one of Akira Toriyama’s most charming non-Dragon Ball heroes.
Rao is an elderly human sheriff who wants to save the people suffering from the water shortage. Although he appears to be just an old sheriff, he is brave, skilled in combat, and has a hidden past connected to the military.
Thief is a demon who travels with Beelzebub and Rao. He is smart, cautious, and experienced, often acting as the practical member of the group.
Akira Toriyama was one of Japan’s most influential manga artists and character designers. He is best known as the creator of Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump, and also worked as a character designer for famous video games such as Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger.
